St. Louis quarterback Marc Bulger was replaced by Kurt Warner in the fourth quarter of a 30-20 loss against Detroit on Sunday.
The Rams said Bulger left the game with a bruised forearm, but he also had a welt near his right ear after he was sacked on a helmet-to-helmet hit by Otis Smith.
St. Louis coach Mike Martz
said Bulger was taken out because he was concerned about the hits Bulger was
taking. Martz also said he planned to play Warner against the Lions.
Bulger was 18-of-31 for 170 yards with one TD, one interception and two fumbles.
Bulger fumbled when sacked by Smith, who was not flagged for his hit.
Warner had not played since he sustained a concussion in a loss to the New York Giants in Week 1.
The two-time MVP had two
possessions to mount a comeback, but he could not move the Rams downfield. Warner
was 4-of-11 for 23 yards.
